In our second edition of our BlackHairOlogy Hair Stories we bring to you Law Student, Sophia Nadia.
Read below as Sophia shares with us her hair care routine.
BlackHairOlogy: Your Everyday hair care?
Sophia Nadia: Well, I must say my everyday hair care would be to spray water on my hair, apply some oil and off I go (honestly nothing much).
BlackHairOlogy: Your hair care routine?
Sophia Nadia: I try to wash my hair once a month and wash every other week, never forgetting to deep condition, I have 4c, somewhat dry, and high porosity hair. Deep conditioning every week greatly helps the hair flourish. Again, I use a protein treatment every three months due to the fact that I wouldn’t want to have to deal with protein overload, also the marvelous effect of pre poo can never be over emphasized so I pre poo on every wash day. Finally I moisturize my hair three times a week simply cause time isn’t my friend. That’s pretty much it.
BlackHairOlogy: What are a some hairstyles you use to help with your hair growth?
Sophia Nadia: Twisting of any kind, be it flat twists, three strand twisting, loss twists, and the likes of it has helped my hair grow tremendously. The only problem I have with twists is that I have to deal with knots sometimes. Also, the African threading method is everything you need for growth, I constantly thread my hair within the first year of being natural and the result was amazing.
BlackHairOlogy: Headwraps? Do you use them? Why or why not?
Sophia Nadia: Yes I use headwraps occasionally, the times I don’t have the urge to wear my hair out or just feel like leaving the hair to rest I make use of headwraps, I’ll say it’s okay I really haven’t noticed any basic importance of using a headwrap.
BlackHairOlogy: Do you have a hair regimen that you have been doing for more than a year?
Sophia Nadia: Lol, no I don’t, I try to but school and work just gets in the way most times.

Most of them (salons) fail to understand the care our natural hair needs, eventually I lost interest in visiting the salon, now I basically make my hair myself and so far it’s been an amazing decision.
BlackHairOlogy: Do you try new products or make them?
Sophia Nadia: I’m a certified product junkie(lol) so yes I love to try out new products .Sometimes I feel like my hair gets used to my old products and it’s only advisable to evolve with the trend.
BlackHairOlogy: How long have you been natural/ if natural do you still go to a hairdresser?
Sophia Nadia: I have been natural for 3 years. I used to visit the salon regularly during my first two years of being natural. Most of them (salons) fail to understand the care our natural hair needs, eventually I lost interest in visiting the salon, now I basically make my hair myself and so far it’s been an amazing decision.
BlackHairOlogy: Do you use a protective style on your hair in the summer or winter?
Sophia Nadia: Both, I’m always using protective styles and sometimes I wear my hair out. Basically what I do is that I twists/braid my hair for 2-3 weeks and wear my hair out for a week.
I attach more care during winter just so the hair can safely get accustomed to the change without breaking.
BlackHairOlogy: Anything else you would like the world to know?
Sophia Nadia: Having natural hair goes beyond just your hair, it’s your flag, your person, and your identity. Be proud to make mistakes and learn from them, it might get tough sometimes just know that it will get glorious eventually.
